Understanding the New Authentication with FWS/USDA Requirements

Recently, the USDA site for bird import and the FWS logins have added a new authentication system. This update ensures your sensitive data related to import/export permits is safe and secure. Check out this guide on the new authentication with FWS/USDA requirements, information and documents required, and the benefits of this new update.

Why the New Authentication System?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) have several responsibilities, including managing natural resources, monitoring wildlife trade, preventing illegal importation and exportation of species regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and U.S. Wildlife laws and regulations. As the digitization of government operations is increasing, it is crucial to safeguard sensitive data and systems from cyber threats.

While traditional authentication methods, like passwords and PINS exist, Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security and makes access to unauthorized individuals even more complex. The confidential information about the user and the regulated items are available in the export and CITES import permit. By implementing stronger authentication methods, data can be safeguarded from fraudulent activity, promoting trust in the online permit process.ย

What are the New Updates in the Authentication?

As per the new authentication with FWS / USDA requirements, the users can verify their identity through a multi-step process. Here is a short guide on what you need to update:

Verifying the Account

You must verify your identity in your existing account with a photo ID (front and back), a confirmed phone number, and a social security number.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

After verifying your account with a photo ID and phone number, you have to undergo a secondary verification step. This step is beyond your username and password. You will be sent a verification code via text message or email or you can also use an authenticator app on your smartphone.

Potential Temporary Login Issues

As the new authentication system was implemented, there were some initial glitches in users’ verification requests. While we have completed this authentication process, only USDA is working for us at the moment. As of February 4, we couldnโ€™t log into the FWS site and modify or add new permits for CITES permits.

In response to this glitch, FWS says that they are working on this issue right now and dealing with a large volume of login issues. Soon, this glitch will be resolved, and the users can import/export their pets. And we are not yet sure whether this affects eDecs fillings for import or not.

How to Prepare for the New System?

Before you start the new authentication process, take the following steps to ensure a smooth transition.

  • You need your photo ID (driverโ€™s license or password) readily available to verify this new authentication with FWS / USDA requirements.
  • Make sure your phone number and email address entered in your account is up-to-date.
  • You can consider using an authentication app like Google Authenticator or Authy to keep your account more safe.
  • Often check the FWS and USDA websites for any announcement regarding the new authentication system.

Benefits of New Authentication with FWS/USDA Requirements

Multi-factor authentication helps to reduce the risk of unauthorized access significantly. Even if one factor is compromised, the other factors will secure your account. Your data will remain confidential and integral with this advanced encryption. This new authentication system focuses on the convenience of users with features like biometric authentication and single-sign-on (SSO).

Key Takeaways

The new authentication with FWS/USDA requirements ensures improved security of your data related to import and export permits. The MFA adds a layer of extra security and protects your account against unauthorized individual access. Make sure to keep your contact information and relevant documents up-to-date. You can also use authenticator apps and monitor official sites for any new updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why is there a new authentication system?

The FWS and USDA implemented a new authentication system to strengthen the existing security of the user data and prevent unauthorized login attempts.

2) What is all the information required for account verification?

You need a photo ID (front and back), confirmation of phone number and email address, and your social security number.

3) How does Multi-factor Authentication work?

Once you verify your account with basic information, you have to add a secondary verification step to receive a code via text message or email address. You can also use an authenticator app to enhance your user account security.

4) Iโ€™m having trouble logging in to the FWS website. Is this related to the new system?

Yes. There is trouble logging in and updating the CITES permit. They are working on fixing these glitches, and soon you will be able to log into the FWS website.

5) Will the new system affect my existing permits?
